Waves 2020 - Update | WAVES FESTIVAL

Planning a festival in 2020: Which topics will concern us? What will be true and vital this autumn? What rules, regulations and recommendations will apply? What do we need? What do we want? What do we fear?

After countless ideas, discarded concepts, worries, hopes, and fresh starts, one thing is obvious: we have to stay flexible; keep to work on several alternatives at the same time; go with the waves.

We hope to spend some intense, inspiring festival days together with you in September. This will be the 10^th edition of Waves Festival, and we have been thinking of many beautiful things to surprise you with for this anniversary.

However, some of these ideas will arguably only be realised next year. Some of them will probably –hopefully– still be implemented. So as to to share our current plans and thoughts with you as transparently as possible, an update with details follows beneath.

The Status Quo

Considering the Corona epidemic we’ve spent the past months developing various scenarios how to implement and transform Waves 2020 in such a way that it can be a source of new music inspiration, a good networking platform, an exciting panel offering, or just a nice festival for everyone involved, despite all limitations.
The effects of the current regulations such as distance rules, prescribed seating, fixed traffic routes, limited bar operations are not only uneconomical, they are just life-threatening for a small company like ours.

That’s why Waves 2020 will be different: digital + analog = hybrid.

We’ll be streaming, we’ll be offering public viewing, and we’ll also implement a variety of live elements.

The Festival In Detail

Streaming Waves – in 2020 you will not be able to enjoy concerts of national and international newcomers and headliners in different venues, but on different channels via stream. Multi-channel stream event instead of multi-venue, in a manner of speaking. From 10th to 12th September 2020, around 70 acts will be playing on several channels.

There will be fine live shows streamed from the Big Hall at WUK, and also concerts at special places in Vienna which were preproduced in co-operaton with the TV station W24. Thus a diverse series of concerts is created, augmented with many shows by international acts from their respective hometowns. Another channel will provide interviews, backstage reports, and features.

Public viewing – according to current regulations this will be possible. In addition to streaming, we’ll offer public viewing at the WUK Yard and, if possible and required, at one more open-air location. You can reserve a complimentary seat to enjoy the programme shown on several screens. Bar service will be available, face coverings will not be compulsory.

Live shows – we are constantly following the development and we work on implementation variants.

The Conference In Detail

The basis for the conference – a varied conference program will be held in several rooms of the WUK with free admission. While moderators and local speakers participate in panels, workshops, and meetings on site, we connect international speakers and panelists via video conference.

Participating in the conference – while all conference content can be accessed via video conference at any time, it will be possible for a limited number of participants to be present directly in the conference rooms.

Obviously we will keep ourselves informed about any relaxation of the regulations regarding further possibilities to attend live shows. Everything feasible for us in terms of organisation and naturally financially, we will of course follow up and inform you.

Ein Festival planen im Jahr 2020: Welche Themen werden uns bewegen? Was wird im Herbst richtig und wichtig sein? Welche Regeln, Verordnungen und Empfehlungen werden gelten? Was brauchen wir? Was wünschen wir uns? Was befürchten wir?

Nach vielen Ideen, verworfenen Konzepten, Sorgen, Hoffnungen und Neuanfängen ist klar: Wir müssen flexibel bleiben. An mehreren Varianten gleichzeitig arbeiten. Mit der Welle gehen.

Wir hoffen, im September gemeinsam mit euch intensive, inspirierende Festival-Tage verbringen zu können. Es wird die 10. Ausgabe von Waves sein, ein Jubiläum, zu dem wir uns viele schöne Dinge überlegt haben, mit denen wir euch überraschen wollten.

Einiges wird wohl erst im nächsten Jahr stattfinden können. Einiges wird sich vielleicht, hoffentlich, realisieren lassen. Um möglichst transparent unsere derzeitigen Planungen und Überlegungen mit euch zu teilen, folgen hier ausführliche Infos.

Status Quo

In den letzten Monaten haben wir angesichts der Corona-Epidemie verschiedenste Szenarien entwickelt, wie wir Waves 2020 so umsetzen können, dass es für alle Beteiligten trotz Einschränkungen eine Quelle neuer Musik-Inspiration, eine gute Networking-Plattform, ein spannendes Panel-Angebot oder auch einfach nur ein schönes Festival sein kann.

Die Auswirkungen der aktuellen Auflagen – u.a. Abstandsregeln, vorgeschriebene Bestuhlung, fixe Verkehrswege, eingeschränkter Bar-Betrieb – sind nach genauer Kalkulation für uns nicht nur wirtschaftlich nicht rentabel, sondern existenzbedrohend.

Waves 2020 wird daher anders. Digital + analog = hybrid.

Wir werden streamen, wir bieten Public Viewing, und es wird auch unterschiedliche Live-Elemente geben.

Das Festival im Detail

Waves im Stream – Konzerte nationaler und internationaler Newcomer sowie Headliner werdet ihr 2020 nicht vor Ort in verschiedenen Venues genießen können, sondern auf verschiedenen Channels via Stream. Multi-Channel-Stream-Event statt Multi-Venue sozusagen.

Von 10. bis 12. September 2020 werden so um die 70 Acts auf mehreren Channels spielen. Gestreamt werden gut ausproduzierte Live-Shows aus der großen Halle im WUK bis zu einer Reihe von Konzerten, die vorab in Kooperation mit dem TV-Sender W24 an außergewöhnlichen Orten in Wien eingespielt wurden. Angereichert mit vielen Shows internationaler Acts aus ihren jeweiligen Heimatstädten entsteht ein vielfältiger Konzertreigen. Ergänzt werden die Shows mit Interviews, Backstage-Berichten und Features auf einem weiteren Kanal.

Public Viewing – Nach derzeitigem Stand möglich und umsetzbar: Zusätzlich zum Streaming gibt es ein Public Viewing im WUK Hof und nach Möglichkeit und Bedarf auch noch an einer weiteren Open-Air-Location. Über zahlreiche Screens an mehreren Plätzen läuft ein fixes Programm, für das man sich kostenlos einen Sitz reservieren kann. Die Areas werden bestuhlt sein, Bar-Ausschank möglich und MNS nicht notwendig.

Live-Shows – wir verfolgen die Entwicklungen und arbeiten an Umsetzungsvarianten.

Die Conference im Detail

Die Basis für die Conference – In mehreren Räumen des WUK wird ein vielfältiges Konferenz-Programm bei freiem Eintritt umgesetzt. Während ModeratorInnen und heimische SpeakerInnen vor Ort an Panels, Workshops und Sessions teilnehmen, schalten wir internationale Vortragende und DiskussionsteilnehmerInnen per Videokonferenz zu.

An der Konferenz teilnehmen – Während man sich jederzeit in alle Konferenz-Inhalte per Videokonferenz einwählen kann, wird es zum aktuellen Stand auch für eine beschränkte Anzahl an TeilnehmerInnen möglich sein, direkt in den Konferenz-Räumen anwesend zu sein.

Wir halten uns natürlich auf dem Laufenden, was jegliche Lockerung der Verordnungen im Hinblick auf weitere Möglichkeiten für Live-Konzert-Besuche betrifft. Alles, was für uns organisatorisch und, noch viel wichtiger, finanziell umsetzbar ist, werden wir natürlich verfolgen und euch kommunizieren.
